Utilizamos on para dizer que o local esta on a river(em um rio)/ on a road(em uma estrada)/ on the coast(na costa)
Budapest is on the Danube(River)
Portsmouth is on the south coast of England (Porsmouth está na costa sul da Inglaterra)

on the way(no caminho)
We stopped at a small village on the way to London.(Nós paramos em uma pesquena aldeia no caminho para Londres).

Jane's house is at the other end of the street.(A casa de Jane esta no final da outra rua)

The garden is at the back of the house(O Jardim esta atrás da casa). Não podemos usar in por que o jardim esta do lado de fora da casa.
Let's sit at the front of the cinema. (Vamos sentar na frente no cinema)
We are at the back, We can't see very well.(Estamos na parte de trás, Nós não podemos ver muito bem).

I am sitting in the back of the car. (Eu estou sentado no banco de trás do carro)
