Comparative and superlative

Os graus de comparação dos adjetivos - The degrees of comparison of adjectives:

a) Comparativo de igualdade: é usado toda vez que se quer expressar a igualdade de dois seres. É marcado pela forma: As + adjective + as.

b) Comparativo de inferioridade: é usado para expressar um grau de inferioridade perante o outro ser. É marcado pela forma: less + adjective + than.

c) Comparativo de superioridade: é usado para demonstrar que um ser é superior a outro. É marcado pela forma: more + adjective+ than

Exemplo de comparativo de igualdade

Cezar is as funny as Raul. (Cezar é tão engraçado quanto Raul.)

Carla is as interesting as Naiara. (Carla é tão interessante quanto Naiara.)

The dog is as big as the lion. (O cachorro é tão grande quanto o leão.)

Regras:

• AS (TÃO) + ADJETIVO ou ADVÉRBIO + AS (QUANTO): nas frases afirmativas

Apple is as healthy as orange. (A maçã é tão saudável quanto a laranja.)

My brother is as strong as you. (Meu irmão é tão forte quanto você.)

My mother is as young as my teacher. (Minha mãe é tão nova quanto a minha professora.)

• NOT AS/SO (NÃO TÃO) + ADJETIVO ou ADVÉRBIO + AS (QUANTO): nas frases negativas

Larissa is not so intelligent as her sister. (Larissa não é tão inteligente quanto sua irmã.)

My brother is not so strong as me. (Meu irmão não é tão forte quanto eu.)

We are not as funny as her friends. (Nós não somos tão engraçados quanto os amigos dela.)

as... as hell ("pra caramba") Exemplo: I'm tired as hell of listening to your problems*. (Estou cansado "pra caramba" de escutar seus problemas.) * OBSERVAÇÃO: O primeiro as dessas expressões pode ser suprimido em um estilo mais informal.

As good as it gets! (Melhor é impossível!) Exemplo: I intend to spend my vacation as good as it gets: in a divine brazilian beach. (Pretendo passar minhas férias de forma melhor impossível: em uma paradisíaca praia brasileira.) Exemplo de Comparativo de inferioridade Regras: 1. ADJETIVO GRAU SUPERLATIVO SUPERIORIDADE OLD (velho) The oldest CLEAR (claro) The clearest TALL (alto) The tallest STRANGE (estranho) The strangest Adjetivos - Consoante + Vogal + Consoante - Dobrar a última consoante e acrescentar EST ADJETIVO GRAU SUPERLATIVO SUPERIORIDADE FAT (gordo) The fattest HOT (quente) The hottest BIG (grande) The biggest THIN (magro) The thinnest Adjetivos dissílabas. Eles são chamados de Formas Comparativas e Superlativas Irregulares.
